“ And this commandment have me. ” The Apostle drives home his arguments for the practice of Brotherly love by the fact that God has commanded all who love Him to love their brethren. Matthew 12: 50 ” For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother! ” or for the extension of the comprehension of the brotherhood – Hebrews 2: 11 ” For both He who sanctified making men holy, and those who are sanctified all have one Father. For this reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren; ” Where has God-given this commandment?
In the whole law,which is summed up in loving God with all one’s heart and one’s neighbor as oneself ( Deuteronomy 6: 5; Leviticus 19: 18; Luke 10: 27 ). The Apostle thus anticipates a possible objection. A man may say:
” I can love God without loving my brother, and I can prove my love by keeping His commandments – John 14: 15 ” If you really love Me, you will keep ( obey ) My commands. “
Nay, says Saint John, your own argument shews your error: You cannot keep His commandments without loving your brother – 1 John 4: 21 ” And this command ( charge, order, injunction ) we have from him: that he who loves God shall love his brother ( believer ) also. ”
Thus then we have two (2) revelations of God:
- our brother, who is His image – 2 Corinthians 3: 18 “ And all of us, as with unveiled face, because we continued to behold in the word of God as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are constantly being transfigured into His very own image in ever-increasing splendor and from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord who is the spirit. “;
- and His commandments which is His will – 1 John 3: 23 ” And this is His order ( His command, His injunction ): that we should believe in ( put our faith and trust in and adhere to and rely on ) the name of His Son Jesus Christ ( the Messiah ), and that we should love one another, just as He has commanded us. “
Not to love our brother is a flagrant violation of both.
