What Jesus meant by ” YOU ” at the revelation of His identity by the Holy Spirit to Peter in Matthew 16: 18 ” And I say to you that are Peter, and on this rock I will build My Church; and the gates of death will not overpower it ( by preventing the resurrection of the Christ ). “
Jesus Christ stated plainly & clearly that His ” family ” is “ My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s Word and put it into practice – Luke 8: 21. ” In other words; family here means: A group of non biological people, who genuinely love, trust and care for each other – Furthermore, having One father, One faith, One vision or destiny & One Lord. Jesus at the beginning of His public ministry, acknowledged the facts that His people were ” worried and helpless ” because of their lack of knowledge – They were like sheep without ” shepherd “; and He decided to call for Workers as ” Apostles ” or ” disciples ” or ” brothers & sisters ” in order to sustain the ” Harvest ” – Matthew 10: 1 – 4. The twelve (12) apostles were chosen to bring the ” Good News to all the nations of the world “.
The ” Great commission ” proclaim at the end of His ministry – Matthew 28: 19 – 20 was not embodied to the Apostle Peter alone. But on the twelve first, and secondly on their followers ( today believers called Christians ). They however, fellowship and worship everywhere ( under the tree; in a mountain; a synagogue or a cathedral, etc… ) within all sort of religious denomination around the world. This what Jesus spelled as ” YOU “. His loved one; His body; His Church. This is the mystery revealed to us in 1 Corinthians 6: 19 ” Do you not know that your body is a TEMPLE of the Holy Spirit. Who is within you, whom you have received as a gift from God, and that you are not your own property? “.
Allow me just to brightening a little the word ” temple “: It is locus ( a center, source, as of activities or power ) of the presence of God – Genesis 26: 24 or Exodus 33: 7 – 11. Jesus said: “ But the time is coming and is already here, when by the power of God’s Spirit people will worship the Father as he really is offering him true worship that he wants – John 4: 23. ”
Of course, the believer can be called the ” temple of God ” only because, Christ Himself is the temple and the believer participates in Christ – 1 Corinthians 3: 9 – 17. The believer like Paul himself must be culturally pure in order to live in God’s presence – 2 Corinthians 2: 17
The Body of Christ ,the Church ( the totality of His followers ) is built on Christ as the foundation and cornerstone – 1 Peter 2: 5 – 6 ” You believers, like living stones, are being built up into a spiritual house for a holy and dedicated priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices that are acceptable and pleasing to God through Jesus Christ. ” For this is contained in Scripture:
“ Behold I am laying in Zion a CHOSEN STONE, A PRECIOUS honored CORNERSTONE: And he who believes in him. Whoever adheres to, trust in, and relies on Him, will never be disappointed in his expectations.”
