All our victories over satan, are obtained by the power derived from Jesus Christ, and he must have all the praise: But, let us beware of Spiritual pride, which has been the DESTRUCTION OF MANY. Our Lord rejoiced at the prospect of the Salvation of many souls. It was fit that particular notice should be taken of that hour of joy; there were few such, for he was a Man of sorrows, in that hour in which he saw satan fall, and heard of the good success of his ministers, in that hour he rejoiced. He has ever resisted the proud and given grace to the humble – James 4: 6-7 ” But he gave more grace. Wherefore he said, God resisted the proud, but gave grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. “
The more simply dependent we are on the teaching; help and blessing of the Son of God, the more we shall know both of the Father, and of the Son; the more blessed we shall be in seeing the Glory, and hearing the words of the Divine Savior; and the more useful we shall be made in promoting his cause.
Luke 10: 23: ” Blessed are the eyes that see what you have seen. “
Which is to be understood both of corporal and intellectual sides: It was their happiness to see Christ in the flesh, and converse with him in person, be eyewitnesses of His majesty, and see with their own eyes the miracles performed by Him, the proofs and attestations of those doctrines they were to publish to all the World, and it was still their greater happiness, that they saw His Glory of the only begotten Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.
However, they heard the words of truth from the lips of that great Prophet, Moses said should rise up among them, like unto Him, whom they should hear: They heard with their own ears, a voice from heaven, declaring him to be ” the beloved Son of God ” in whom He was well pleased. They heard the Gospel preached by Him; not only so as to be affected with it, and give their assent to it, but also to understand it Spiritually, and experimentally, and to bring forth th” fruit of it “, and so were that sort of hearers, signified by the good ground in the parable Christ delivered at this occasion.
