Prophet Habakkuk questioned God, if there was any room to denounce wickedness with favor? “ Your eyes are too pure to approve evil, and you cannot look favorably on wickedness. Why then do you look favorably on those who act treacherously? Why are you silent when the wicked ( Chaldean oppressors ) destroy. Those more righteous than they? ” – Habakkuk 1: 13.
Today’s Timely Gospel highlight three aspects of God’s nature when gifting mankind to Salvation: The holiness of God; His mercy and time for retribution ( punishment ).
- 1 Peter 1: 16 ” Because it is written, you shall be Holy, for I am Holy. ” As the traveler, the racer, the warrior and the laborer gathered in their long and loose garments, that they might be ready in their business, so Christians do by their minds and affections. Be sober, be watchful against all spiritual dangers and enemies, and be temperate in all behavior. A strong and perfect trust in the grace of God is agreeable with best endeavors in our duty. Holiness is the desire and duty of every Christian.
- 2 Samuel 24: 14 ” David said to Gad: I am in deep distress. Let us fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercy is great. But do not let me fall into human hands. ” It is well, when a man has sinned, if he has a heart within to smite him for it. If we confess our sins, we may pray in faith that God would forge them, and take away, by pardoning mercy, that sin which we cast away by sincere repentance. What we make the matter of our pride, it is just in God to take from us, or make bitter to us, and make it our punishment. God our Father is right & just.
- Romans 12: 19 ” Never take your own revenge beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God for it is written: vengeance is mine, I will repay; says the Lord. ” There is three points in this aspect of God’s time.
First, God deals with the negative precept: Do not take the law into your own hands, but leave God’s way of retribution to work itself. The Apostle means a passionate redress of private wrongs at the bidding of personal resentment. We have nothing to do with apportioning retribution to desert either in private actions or in the treatment of so-called ” criminals “;
Secondly, take the positive follow God’s way of meeting hostility with beneficence: The hungry enemy is to be fed; the thirsty to be given drink, and the reason is that such beneficence will ” heap coals of fire ” upon his head;
Thirdly, meet and conquer evil with good: Be not over comer of evil, but overcome evil with good, is cast into a form which covers not only relations to enemies, but all contact with evil of every kind.
