This is a public statement of a High army commander ( Centurion ) in needs of help, who realized that beyond his authority, there is a man, Jesus Christ, the embodiment of Divine power through His word, but who with the clear consciousness of himself ( unbeliever & deep sinner ) excludes himself of God’s presence, grace and mercy available to all.” Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I am not worthy for you to come under my roof……..but say the word, and my servant will be healed. ” Luke 7: 6 – 7.
The Romans Centurion had pondered over the mystic ( understandable) power of the word of command; he observes Jesus’s ministry at a distance, and he took the courage and sincere humility to come nearer, at last to a dim apprehension of that great truth. In Jesus lie an ultimate power which by the mere utterance of His will could affect matter, could raise the dead, could still a storm, could banish disease, could quell devils. Further, the Centurion saw himself from the inside ( that is what is instructed for Christians today ) – Romans 3: 23 ” for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God. ” However, the clear consciousness of our own sinfulness ought to underlie all our religious feelings and thoughts. We believed therefore, that no man is in a position to apprehend Christianity rightly, who has not made the acquaintance of his own bad self. And we trace a very large proportion of the ” Shallow Christianity ” ( the religion of barter, which thinks to earn God’s favor by deeds and external acts of cult & ritual ); of this day as well as of the disproportion in which its various truths are set forth, and the rising of crops of erroneous conceptions of today’s generation of Christians. It is unfortunately acknowledge that, YOU & I, have to a large extend lose that wholesome consciousness of our own unworthiness and sin, majestically portrayed in the character of a Romans’ centurion, an unbeliever!
Through Jesus love – John 3: 16 ” For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. ” There is no more sense of guiltiness ( worthiness or unworthiness ). Through His passion & sacrifice we accept that we owe everything, to what I HAVE DONE NOTHING TO PROCURE, and to cast myself on the sole, all-sufficient mercy of God in Jesus Christ, our Lord. And then comes LIBERTY, and JOY.
