Silence is the absence of any sound or noise literally. It is very frightening CONCEPT for most of us because of various traumatic or negative episodes in our phobic’s life ( obsessive fear ). The fear of silence can be recognized in various symptoms; the most common ones been the shivering, shaking ,dry mouth, and sweating of palms. However, silence have tremendous health benefits. Just to named a few:
- silence lowers blood pressure and allows you to deal with life’s challenges in a better way;
- silence boost your immune system making it easier for your body to fight of invading bacteria and other pathogens;
- silence make you happy, spending time in silence boosts your brain chemistry and as a great side effect, you are able to focus better too, etc…
This posting is not about the platonic benefits ( philosophical view ) of silence, but it related to the atmosphere of “ fellowship “ with God as our Father, in order to perceive the moves of our “ living Father ” in our lives on the daily basis. Therefore, the most positive sense of “ silence “ is the environment and atmosphere, the sacred space, into which God speaks His word, both to create the world and to save it from death and corruption.
Isaiah 55: 11 ” so is my word that goes out of my mouth: it will not return to me void (not filled ), but it will accomplish that which I PLEASE, and it will prosper in the thing I SENT it to do. “God speaks out of the depths of his own silence, first, to create the universe, then to renew the world through the incarnation of His Son Jesus Christ. Through the voice of the Prophets, including the prophet John in the Book of Revelation; God calls us to silence as well. He invites us to practice the gift of ” pure prayer ” in our sacred space – Matthew 6:6 ” But you, when you pray, enter into your inner room, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. ”
Furthermore, silence is the prerequisite for inner ” stillness ” ( quietness, calmness ) and only inner stillness, to enables us truly to listen to God, to hear his voice, and to commence with him in the depths ( the importance, complexity, seriousness ) of our being. To silence the virtue of stillness adds both tranquility & concentration. Stillness means openness to the divine presence of God and a talent to receive God’s accomplished prayers anywhere at any time. Matthew 26: 63 ” But Jesus held his peace. The high priest answered him, I adjure you by the living God, that you tell us whether you are the Christ, the Son of God. “
The atmosphere of silence which leads to inner calmness is designed to equip followers with tools for creating and maintaining a deep, personal and unbroken communion with God.
