Why the obedience to God so important, AFTER we have received in our ” heart ” the Word ( God’s breath ) through our ” ears ” ? Faith (as deepest absolute & unquestionable trust in the Word ) is paramount to please God – Hebrews 11: 6 ” Without faith it is impossible to be well pleasing to him, for he who comes to God must believe that he exists, and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him. “, and if your faith is genuine and true we will live a lifestyle characterized by righteousness, modeling the example of Jesus Christ. Therefore, ” obedience ” to God proves our love for him ( 1 John 5: 2-3 ); demonstrates our faithfulness to him ( 1 John 2: 3-6 ); glorifies him in the world ( 1 Peter 2: 12 ); and opens avenues of blessing for us ( John 13: 17 ).
- ” By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. For this is love of God that we keep His COMMANDMENTS. And His commandments are not burdensome. “- 1 John 5: 2-3. Just as much as our love for the people of God reflects our love for God ( as expressed in 1 John 3: 10, 17), so our love and obedience to God is a demonstration of love to the body of Christ (the Church). The one who says he loves God yet walks in a lifestyle of conscious disobedience is like the believer who says they walk in fellowship with God , yet walk in darkness ( as in John 1:6 ). Some Christians fell very burdened by the commandments of God, yet the apostle John insists that they aren’t burdensome ( arduous or demanding ).
- ” This is how we know that we know him: if we keep his commandments. One who says, “I know him, and doesn’t keep his commandments, is a liar, and the truth isn’t in him. But whoever keeps his word, God’s love has most certainly been perfected in him. This is how we know that we are in him. he who says he remains in him ought himself also to walk just like he walked. “- 1 John 2: 3-6. The true grace of GOD teaches us “ to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensible, righteously and godly in the present age ” ( Titus 2: 12 ). So after setting forth God’ s grace, the apostle John goes on to show that those who have truly experienced it will show it by living in obedience to his word. John gives this as the first test of how you can know that you know Jesus Christ.
- ” Having good behavior among the nations, so in that of which they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they see, glorify God in the day of visitation. “1 Peter 2: 12. Even the best of men, the chosen generation, the people of God, need to be exhorted to keep from the worst sins. And fleshly lusts are most destructive to man’s soul. It is a sore ( causing pain or discomfort ) judgement to be given up to them. There is a day of visitation coming, wherein God may call to repentance by his word and his grace, then many will glorify God, and the holy lives of his people will have promoted the happy change.
- ” If you know these things, happy are you if you do them. ” John 13: 17. He tells them, that it is not the bare comprehension of these things in their notion that would do them any good, unless they brought their knowledge into practice, for to ” him therefore who knows to do good, and doesn’t do it, to him it is sin “ ( James 4: 17 ). Faith without works is dead, and the knowledge of our Master’s will, if we don’t live by it, expose us to many stripes ( a long narrow mark left by striking with a lash or rod ).
