We could joyfully rehearsed that Christian’s life is about the matters of the heart, Romans 2: 29 “ but he is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit not in the letter, whose praise is not from men, but from God. “ Therefore three (3) valued gifts expressed the uniqueness of Christian’s life: faith; hope and love, 1 Corinthians 13: 13 “ …The greatest of these is love. “ The Love proclaimed here is God himself, 1 John 4: 8. After the drawing of the curtain, let us plainly state that, in like fashion the Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 9: 12-15 “…For this service of giving that you perform not only makes up for lack among the saints, but abounds also through many giving of thanks to God…”, sums up the benefits of liberality by means of a maxim: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly. But the closest parallel actually appears in the teaching of Jesus ” Give and it will be given to you…with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. ” Luke 6: 38.The principle is clear: We harvest in proportion to our planting – or, to use contemporary maxim ” we get as good as we give “. They are three (3) guidelines for giving beyond what he has already listed in 2 Corinthians 8: 11-15 :
- Giving is to be an individual matter that is settled in the privacy of one’s heart;
- Giving require resolve. That means to choose deliberately or to make up one’s own mind about something;
- Giving is to be a private, not a public decision. It is to be decided in the heart.
The desire is in fact to give the way God gave, it was because he so loved the world that he gave his only Son – Jesus ( John 3: 16 ).
The Apostle Paul identifies four (4) beneficiaries of charitable giving in verses 8 to 14 :
–THE GIVER, (verses 8-9) God’s response to generosity is to make all grace abound to the giver through the gift of righteousness;
–THE RECIPIENT (verse 10) God supplied the needs of the needy with basic necessities, and restore the sense of belonging to a large family of followers, showered with unfailing love and hope for a brighter future;
–GOD (verses 11-12) God expressed his power and love as a Father, He must be praised , honored and glorified forever;
–THE CHURCH ( verse 13-14) God allowed his body to spread & flourish by making the provision of his love available at the door step of many, and the faith of his death on the cross: Salvation and eternal life is made real for followers.
