Considering the knowledge of the three worldwide dictionaries (Merriam Webster, Oxford, Wikipedia ), the “debate” is a formal (being in accord with established forms) discussion (conversation concerning a particular topic) among at least two parties, with a contention (a point maintained in an argument to support the subject) by words or arguments. In the reign of the Spirit this word is used only once in the “Revised Version of British and American Bibles “. Proverbs 25:9 ” debate your case with your neighbor, and don’t betray the confidence of another “. This quotation evidently refers to the setting of a difficulty with a neighbor, and anticipates the outcome.Furthermore, there is another Christian perspective of the debate in the book of Matthew 18:15 ” if your brother sins against you, go, show him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained back your brother “.
The Bible call Christians not to debate, but to defend their Faith. The classic verse promoting APOLOGETIC (the defense of Christian faith by words or arguments) 1 Peter 3:5 “, which says that believer are to make a defense ” FOR THE HOPE THAT YOU HOPE “. The only way to do this effectively is to study (the Word) the reasons why we believe, what we believe. This will prepare us to “demolish” the strongholds, proud obstacles, and rebellious thoughts against the knowledge of God. 2 Corinthians 10:5. God’s word does not need to be defended because he is God himself: the essence of the existence. Jesus said to us ” I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies “. John 11:25. The resurrection of Jesus is the evidence by which Christianity should be accepted or rejected.
None of this says that Apologetics can bring alone someone to saving faith. This creates a false dilemma in the minds of many, but it does not have to be “Spirit versus Logic”. Why not both? The Holy Spirit must move someone to a position of belief, but how he accomplishes this, is up to him (we believed is a mystery). For examples, with some people God uses trials; in others it is an emotional experience; or in some cases, it is through reason. God can use whatever means he wants. In any conversation or discussion Christians are commanded to use Apologetics.
