Sadducees drove by excessive desire for more than is needed or deserved, especially for money, wealth, food, fame, power, or countless possessions, conspired to kill Lazarus (Jesus’ s friend) as well as Jesus, and that for no other crime, but because he was raised from the dead by him.” then the leading priests decided to kill Lazarus, too, for it was because of him that many of the people had deserted them and believed in Jesus” (John 12:10-11). This is the faith of Christians in today’s world; but the aim of this good news is to draw awareness of a blueprint for true discipleship.
Who were Sadducees? These are political and religious leaders in Jewish society in the late seventy before Jesus; they were in charged of overseeing many formal affairs of the State and also, the maintenance of the temple in Jerusalem, that means the running of priestly responsibilities mandated in the Torah. However, according to Josephus the Sadducees believed that: there is no fate; the soul is not immortal, there is no after life; there are no rewards or penalties after death; there is no resurrection of the dead, but believed in the traditional Jewish concept of scheol for those who had died.
Jesus came and said ” I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying” (John 11:25). This TRUTH was mind blowing or “blaspheme” and defiled the social order and peace of the Jewish society as a whole.Jesus speaking from the Father, did not considered the interests of the stakeholders of Jewish community (Sadducee & Pharisee). Perhaps, in 2017, we still have a growing community of Jewish’s believers around the world from other races; people who are willing to put their lives at stake because of the protection of their greedy interests in our families; our offices; our religious denominations, etc…The apostle Paul emphasized later in 1 Corinthians 15:17-19
that “..and if Christ has not been raised, then our faith is useless and we still guilty of our sins“. The physical resurrection of Jesus is the cornerstone of redemption-both for mankind and for the earth-indeed, without Christ’s resurrection there is no Christianity. In other words, eternal life in the body & the spirit. Jesus went further and called the Pharisees “HYPOCRITES” because they shut the door of salvation because of their greed (Matthew 23:13). Now you can dared to imagine the blind madness the Sadducees had and horribly wicked they were, that they stopped at nothing whereby they might satisfy their malice; their envy to secure their worldly interests .The Jewish leaders resisted the sure free accessible salvation brought by Jesus because:
- the information presented coincided not with the current values, beliefs and attitudes;
- they perceived that the change will cost them more than it will benefit them;
- the innovation requires major changes in their views or lives rather than marginal.
These are the undisclosed reasons why they decided to stop the process of repentance by attempting taking Jesus’s life. True disciples will proclaim that Jesus is the Son of God, worthy of all praise and worship, Lord over all and Savior of repentant sinners. Knowing that the disciples would very likely suffer persecution, Jesus encouraged us to persevere (Matthew 10:25).
